Compensation Survey

Are You Attracting the Best and Brightest?

Want to understand how your benefits and salaries compare to peer institutions? IHA is pleased to partner with the Colorado Hospital Association to develop the Annual Health Care Compensation Survey (login required). Together, we track compensation levels for approximately 200 hospital positions. This information can help you set salary benchmarks for various positions, compare your benefits to peer institutions and develop a total compensation package that attracts the most qualified health care professionals.

How to Participate:

We encourage you to become part of the annual compensation survey. Your participation is voluntary, but only participating hospitals will receive access to survey results. Data is collected online at the Health Care Salary websiteTo join the survey, email Cheryl Pullum to set up your online account. Your login will also provide you with access to previous years’ reports.

Department of Justice Requirements
The Department of Justice governs the collection and release of data for the survey. The IHA survey complies 100% with the DOJ Safety Zones. The DOJ requires that salary data be "aged" for at least 90 days. We collect data as of 4/1 and release the survey results sometime in July.
For the categories reflected, the DOJ requires:

  • that there are at least five providers reporting data upon which each disseminated statistic is based,
  • no individual provider's data may represent more than 25%, on a weighted basis of that statistic,
  • any information disseminated must be sufficiently aggregated such that it would not allow recipients to identify the prices charged or compensation paid by any particular provider
  • For this reason, hospital systems are requested to report each hospital individually and not aggregated as one "system".

The survey contains 585 Master job codes. IHA currently utilizes 200 of those codes in an effort to consolidate the output and provide as much useful information as possible. We ask that hospitals merge previously reported positions into the current job code offerings.

Report Output

  • The Compensation Survey results will be released only to those members who participate in the survey.
  • IHA can design any type of peer group that is valuable for participating members. Statewide, Districts, Urban/Rural, CAH, Non-CAH, Bed Size and other criteria can be used in peer grouping.
  • IHA members can create custom peer groups, as long as they include 10 or more hospitals in the peer group.
  • A "stepping" mechanism exists so that a hospital is unable to create a peer group of 10 hospitals and then pick an 11th hospital to back into that hospital's data.
  • The Compensation Survey custom peer grouping tool has a DOJ checking mechanism built in so that members can see which jobs will be visible and which jobs won't, due to fewer than five hospitals reporting data for that job, or the 25 percent rule.
