Friends of Indiana Hospitals

Be a Champion of Common-Sense Health Care Policy

This is an era of profound change for hospitals and health care professionals. Along with federal health care reform, we are facing cuts in Medicare and Medicaid that could eliminate thousands of Indiana health care jobs. Our administrative responsibilities are increasing exponentially as we work to comply with changing regulations. Our patients are waiting longer and paying more to get the care they need.

The Friends of Indiana Hospitals Political Action Committee was created by a bipartisan group of hospital administrators, managers, physicians and others interested in finding solutions. Through members’ financial contributions, we identify and support candidates from both parties who share our goals on health care policy.

Making Your PAC Goal

  1. Gather home addresses of potential donors and previous donors, including management teams, medical staff and board members.
  2. Customize recruitment letters and print on Friends stationery. Buy stamps.
  3. Mail each potential donor a letter and Friends brochure with donor card and envelope.
  4. Additionally, consider hosting an after-hours, off-site meeting. You can reach out to Brian Tabor, IHA vice president of government relations, to assist. Email Brian at btabor@IHAconnect.org or call 317-423-7743.
  5. Use the key facts and advocacy success stories that will best reach your audiences.
  6. Encourage club membership:
  7. Send follow-up letters to potential donors.
  8. Send thank-you cards or letters to all contributors.
  9. Finally, make your own donation. If your hospital is close to making goal, you may want to add enough to your donation to make the goal.

Sample Recruitment Letters

Friends of Indiana Hospitals has created these sample recruitment letters to use in your hospital's PAC campaign.

Donation Dos and Don'ts

Anyone can contribute to the Friends of Indiana Hospitals PAC. Contributions from salaried employees who have managerial, supervisory or policy-making duties and trustees of the institution can be transferred to AHA PAC. All other contributions are used solely at the state level to support Indiana candidates who advocate for sound health policy.

If your hospital participates in another federal PAC, Friends uses your contributions solely to support state-level candidates.

Things to Do

  • Include the following in all your contribution materials:
    • "Your contribution is important to us, but we want to emphasize that all contributions are voluntary and have no impact on your job status, performance review, compensation or employment. Any amount given, or the decision not to give, will not advantage or disadvantage you. Contributions or gifts to the Friends of Indiana Hospitals and/or the AHA PAC are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes."
  • Verify that all contributions are made by individuals and that those individuals provide their contact information.
  • Encourage individuals to make contributions by check or credit card. Cash contributions may not exceed $100.
  • Invite Brian Tabor, IHA vice president of government relations, to host an informational meeting.
  • Organize your own after-hours fundraising event.
  • Compile a list of names and addresses of eligible employees, board members and other interested individuals in the medical staff or community outside of normal working hours.
  • Volunteer your time and send recruitment letters to the compiled list outside of normal working hours.
  • Use advocacy success stories and talking points to help facilitate conversation.

Things to Avoid

  • Don't print recruitment letters or other PAC items on hospital stationery or use hospital supplies and facilities to produce PAC materials.
  • Don't make PAC an official staff or agenda item.
  • Don't suggest that PAC contributions are tied to performance appraisals or responsibilities.
  • Don't compile lists or send recruitment letters during normal working hours.
  • Don't accept cash contributions exceeding $100.
